Projector screen gain explained without the jargon

Screen gain describes relative reflected brightness compared with a reference surface under defined conditions. It is useful—but only when you also consider viewing angle, ambient light and projector output.

A simple way to read gain

0.6 gain

Reflects less light toward the measurement direction than a 1.0 reference, often trading raw brightness for darker blacks or wider distribution depending on the material.

1.0 gain

Acts as the broad reference point. It does not mean “perfect” and says nothing by itself about ambient-light rejection.

1.2 gain

Can deliver more measured brightness in the designed viewing direction, often with greater directionality.

Higher gain can be useful

It can help maintain punch on a very large screen or when you want more on-axis brightness from a UST setup.

Higher gain can also narrow the sweet spot

When a surface concentrates light, viewers farther from the preferred direction may see less brightness or uniformity.

Read gain with ALR and viewing angle

Three numbers belong together: gain tells you about directional brightness, ALR tells you about unwanted light rejection, and viewing angle tells you how broadly the useful image is distributed. A buying decision based on only one of them is incomplete.
